How Many Surya Grahan in 2020
There are two surya grahan (solar eclipse) in the year of 2020. First Surya Grahan on 21 June 2020 and Second Surya Grahan (solar eclipse) will be on 14 December 2020.
What is Surya Grahan (solar eclipse)?
A solar eclipse occurs when a part of the Earth is completely covered in a shadow cast by the Moon that completely or partially blocks sunlight. This is when the Sun, Moon and Earth align. Such alignments coincide with a new moon (tal) that indicates the moon is closest to the elliptical plane. In a total eclipse, the Sun’s disk is completely obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured.

If the moon were in a perfectly spherical orbit, there would have been a total solar eclipse on every new moon, slightly closer to the Earth and in the same orbital plane. However, since the Moon’s orbit is inclined more than 5 degrees to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, its shadow usually misses the Earth. A solar eclipse can only occur when the moon is very close to the plane of the eclipse during a new moon. There must be special circumstances for the coincidence of the two events because the Moon’s orbit crosses the eclipse at its orbital nodes twice every orbital month (27.212220 days) while a new moon occurs once every one month (29.530587981 days). Solar (and lunar) eclipses therefore occur only during the eclipse season, resulting in at least two, and five, solar eclipses each year; There cannot be more than two total eclipses.
